Here Lies Jenny, conceived and directed by Roger Rees, Zipper Theatre, New York

The Zipper Theatre on 37th Street provides the scruffy setting for this hour-long cycle of songs by Kurt Weill, headlined by Bebe Neuwirth. Neuwirth brings a hard vibrato to most of the songs, and it is a novel experience to hear "Barbara's Song" sung in a low alto. However, she tangos on the small stage, and her reading of "Surabaya Johnny," with its emotional twists and turns, is pinpoint. She is joined by Ed Dixon, who has a warm Germanic baritone like old radio vacuum tubes. The evening is framed by two renditions of the haunting "Bilbao Song," excellently done.

The Zipper, recycled office/factory space, is upholstered in surplus automobile bench seats; taking one's place in the mezzanine, with seating twelve across, is like crawling into the wayback of Mom's Vistacruiser. I gotta believe that someone was looking the other way when the occupancy permits were granted.
