Voiceover work by Bill Kurtis and an uncredited cameo by Jack Black can't spark this by-the-numbers satire of local TV news in the 1970s, Anchorman.
Christina Applegate deserves recognition for making her period wardrobe look good; remember, this was the time of wrap dresses and fabrics that looked like motel room drapes. Steve Carell shows promise as Brick Tamland, the weatherman who's a few hailstones shy.
But this arbitrary, choppy, overwrought movie is generally comedy-free.
