Silver Spring Stage is the place where the junk that would otherwise clutter up your attic goes to die. In our rehearsal space, I found this old DuMont television set, model RA-600-600T-A, with some of its electronics removed but the picture tube and back panel intact.
Now, DuMont stopped broadcasting the year I was born, and I guess that it ceased manufacturing operations at about the same time, some time in the 1950s.
I was intrigued by the complicated instructions for the fine-tuning controls.
- RF AGC delay
- Dumonitor: With Fringe Lock control (front panel) fully counterclockwise adjust Dumonitor for max. contrast to the point of producing picture instability or sound buzz, then back off slightly for stable operation.
- Vert. Lin.
- Vert. Size
- Hor. Size
- Hor. Freq. Set: If Horizontal Lock can not be obtained with adjustment of Hor. Hold control (front panel) within its factory adjusted range, Hor. Freq. Set control should be adjusted to obtain proper Horizontal Lock.
Important: A focus strap is on CRT base, connected between pins 6 and 1, or 6 and 10. Use whichever gives best overall focus.
You can see the drawing of the focus strap (as far as I can tell, an analog-era jumper) in the detail photo.
The back panel also informs us that the set is compliant with FCC Rule 15!
The next time I'm fiddling around downloading drivers or configuring a firewall, I'll remember those instructions. Plus ça change, eh?
