spring flow Eastern Tiger Swallowtails were everywhere to be seen on my quick hike through Great Falls National Park down to this gorge of Difficult Run. At the Potomac overlooks, there were the usual bored children, teenagers too far out on the rocks being chastised by rangers. In the picnic area, a family was taking whacks at a rubber ball with a cricket bat.

skunk cabbage Several patches of Symplocarpus foetidus, Eastern Skunk Cabbage, provided a burst of green in a landscape that is still shaking off the brown of winter.
