And more on access to nature from New York public transit: as my birding friend Paul B. likes to point out, you can get to Jamaica Bay National Wildlife Refuge from the Broad Channel station on the A, or (according to Paul Lehman (ed.), A Birder's Guide to Metropolitan Areas of North America, on the Q53 express bus line.
