unusual Alexandria sign I walked a stretch of the Mount Vernon Trail, which follows the George Washington Memorial Parkway (the G.W.), from the parking area at Daingerfield Island (which is, of course, no longer an island), bringing my mileage for the trail to 14. Once I finish this trail, I can connect up with the Washington & Old Dominion Trail by walking the Four Mile Run Trail and/or the Custis Trail. Today's section of the Mount Vernon is pretty much dominated by the airport. The sections south of Alexandria, particularly where the river sweeps to the west, are much more fun.

I spotted an unusual (and aging) crossbar street name sign near the parking area. For most of its length within the city of Alexandria, the parkway is designated Washington Street, in particular the section where it has at grade intersections with other streets.
