Life in a Northern Virginia suburb of Washington, D.C. B.M.A.T.C., and Etruscan typewriter erasers. Blogged by David Gorsline.
April is National Poetry Month! I wonder if Eliot had anything to do with that.
It seems that I've fallen in with the notoriously obscure John Ashbery for the month. I don't mind, I'm just going to let the nice words buzz through my head the same way I listen to jazz while I'm reading something else.

A transcription of notes from John that I scribbled on my yellow pad during tonight's rehearsal:
-
Andy has some business at the sink on the "single tea leaf" business; react to it
-
bring back the "hunh" reaction to the "ahead of its time" moment [I'm not sure that I know what he's talking about]
-
if the chair goes over in the first confrontation, let it go; stand your ground
-
"It's not that I don't want to loan you my car"
-
sharp reaction to Lee's return at the end of sc. 2
-
uncrumple the sheet of paper [at the end of page 31]
-
"turn your life around": that's the good line-reading [I can't quite remember what I did; I think that, for the first time, I played it sincere]
Notes to myself:
-
make sure that you find distinct tactics for the various bits on pp. 30-31 that are variations on "come on back to the table; this could be a good script"
And I found a great way to read "We're not insane" that flowed naturally out of reacting to Lee's lunge at me: it's just a level, don't-wake-up-the-snake sort of read. I'm so pleased, it just happened. Which I hope doesn't mean that I'll mess with it by the time we go up.
