Peter Marks recaps the building boom among local theaters—Arena Stage, Studio, Woolly Mammoth, Signature, Olney, the Shakespeare Theatre:

The difficulty in such a step up is in ensuring that the needs of the new building do not overshadow the art. "We've got to make sure that we don't become about maintaining the building," says Sam Sweet, managing director of Signature. "One of the dangers is that any expansion or move into a new facility kind of reorients an organization. It can actually affect the balance sheet so that the organization becomes about the building and the necessary costs that go to the facility, which can affect the artistic work."
