Aaron Dobbs and Lily Oei interview one of my
favorite actors, Bill Irwin, who is playing George in Who's Afraid of
Virginia Woolf?
...the more you're onstage, the more you're able to think through your body,
and so it's not so much a series of conscious gestures and choices as just
letting the unconscious tell the story. You have to be able to have been in
front of audiences enough to trust subtle gestures, otherwise you may feel
"Oh this isn't enough, that isn't enough," but in fact a subtle gesture is
often enough, and more than that, is more than enough.
