I can't say that I've fully embraced social bookmarking. I set up an
account at del.icio.us but haven't really used it.
On the plus side, I like being able to add and retrieve bookmarks from any
networked computer, since I have two machines at work, and two at home.
On the other hand, it just takes too many clicks to navigate to the right
page of bookmarks and then to the page I want: I'd much rather pull
something off a menu or (for places I go every day) click a toolbar button.
And I haven't figured out how to use tags effectively to organize bookmarks.
I'm stuck in a hierarchical mindset.
That said, I decided to give Connotea
a try.
Like everything else in this century, it's still in beta and is lacking a
lot of features: there's no preference page to allow you to specify how many
items to return on a page; the search and filtering capabilities are
rudimentary; the edit page dumps you in an unhelpful place when you're done;
and the tagging engine makes some weird arbitrary choices about
capitalization.
But the service will upload bookmarks from your Firefox profile, which can
be a big kick-start.
I'm limiting the
bookmarks that I make public to certain categories. We'll see whether
I'm still using it a month from now.
