pedantic nuthatch
Life in a Northern Virginia suburb of Washington, D.C. B.M.A.T.C., and Etruscan typewriter erasers. Blogged by David Gorsline.

We worked the end of the show tonight, as we did last night. I have finally weaned myself from the book for the last scenes. I have seven monologues of mine that are rather flat at this point, that need more levels and colors:

  • p. 48: "I don't want him out here..."
  • p. 58: "There's nothing down here for me."
  • p. 52: bashing the typewriter and the struggling golfers
  • p. 49: the old man's teeth
  • p. 47: "I'm looking forward to the smell of the night. The bushes. Orange blossoms."
  • p. 36: on the phone trying to reach Saul
  • p. 38: "Lee, come on, level with me..."
The first two need the most work. I've only worked "There's nothing down here for me" once off book, and it's a turning point for Austin. "I don't want him out here..." is the last time that Austin speaks ill of his father, and it should be full of pity and disgust and everything that he feels about his father. The "smell of the night" monologue John wants to go very quickly, but I want to make sure that some of its lyricism is retained.

We've run the fight extensively, so it's beginning to become automatic. The very last moments are a big rush, still very violent (as opposed to the standoff described in the stage directions in the script). When I sit down with my yellow pad for notes after that scene (9), I'm printing in big scrawly capitals instead of my usual more compact cursive, because I can't control my handwriting otherwise.

Tomorrow I think I'll figure out what I'm going to wear, since it will probably come out of my closet or off the rack at J. Crew.
